Sub Project BRUCE: Bridging Robots for Underwater Communication Enrichment

 

 

 

BRUCE, subproject led by the University of Florence, proposes to integrate a team of low-cost heterogeneous AUVs into the SUNRISE - LOON infrastructure, exploiting the features of the SUNSET framework. The AUVs of the team have different acoustic communication hardware that up to now are not compliant with the JANUS standard.

In this case, at least one of the vehicles must have the capability to work as a "mobile interpreter" between different acoustic communication "worlds".

To achieve this end, one of the vehicles, named MARTA (MArine Robotic Tool for Archaeology - FP7 project ARROWS 2012-2015, http://www.arrowsproject.eu), features acoustic modems from two different firms (Evologics, AppliCon) so it can act as a gateway.

 

BRUCE will investigate the potential, strength, weakness, and security threats related to the use of a team of AUVs, and associated data routing needs, including a mobile gateway. The gateway, equipped with two different modems, will try to investigate the feasibility of the following scenarios:

  • Participation to a preliminary "conference" including JANUS-compliant nodes and agreement on a time slot to be allocated for vendor-specific (and faster than JANUS) communication among two or more homogeneous mobile and/or fixed nodes, one of which is on board the bridging vehicle MARTA;
  • Fast bridging among heterogeneous nodes interlaced by a buffer on board MARTA;
  • Optimization of the dynamic positioning of the mobile gateway MARTA among the communication network. In case of sub-fleets of AUVs, each fleet could be equipped with homogeneous acoustic modems. In this case a precise positioning of the gateway node could be used to optimize the transmission between the fleets, effectively boosting the communication efficiency.
